Re: Continual Flame
even when I have made it available - the most we use it for are "always on" burners, like a skillet that perpetually cooks whatever is put on it, but not too fast it burns/chars. Those are fun items but not too overpowerful. Continual flame doesn't give off heat The spell itself, no, but ...

Re: Continual Flame
Continual flames makes an interesting burial marker. As a player, I have used it but not often as it is not a spell I want in my regular adventuring list, but can find a use for from a scroll or other means -- spell resources are too vital to spend a slot on a spell that might never get cast. As a C...

Re: C&C "Kits"
Class abilities are not always as easy as swapping 1:1 - rogue/thief skills, generally, yes, but back stab is not the same as picking locks. So, I recommend not doing an easy switch like that but, rather, build the class like it was actually new... this means it ends up with its own XP table. Howeve...

Re: Backgrounds
Here is, again, my Arcanum to C&C conversion which might be useful, noting that the skill categories are not included here as they are much too long for a single post - a competent Castle Keeper can devise their own meaning: Backgrounds – All characters in The Arcanum come from somewhere, being ...

Re: Familiars
I've expanded the options to include minor elementals as the spell is supposed to gain a familiar, when successful, from within whatever terrain one is in so... what happens when someone casts it and they're on the Plane of Fire? Well, for me, they are more likely to get a mephit or a spark. Mephits...

Animal Friendship when misused and allowed to make any would-be beastie a bestie and a combatant even if they're normally docile, like bears. Detect Poison - goodbye almost every good secondary assassination plan, and in many cases, primary as well. Influence -- lower-level charm person-like effect ...

Re: Rogue skills
There are several skills that the rogue does not get which I believe they, or at least the assassin, should have: 1) Counter-Tracking (leave behind no evidence; rangers should have this, too) 2) Crowd Avoidance (the ability to hide among many) 3) Kill Silently (kill someone in a way that prevents au...

Re: Resources Then & Now (SRD 5.1)
Game copies existed before there was a SRD. All it did, really, was provide a reusable template/framework in which others could create their variations,. For WotC, this was intended to be "they'll make modules and the stuff we don't want to, so we can focus only on the important stuff like rule...

Has anyone ever used an instant kill rule, a la d20 and the triple 20s?
I did once. Didn't like it, mostly because it happened one time, and special rules that are that edge case are just not interesting to me. As a full-time game tweaker.

"p50 of the PHB (7th), it notes that Dwarves have an inherent Resistance to Arcane Magic. It grants them "a +3 bonus to all saving throws against arcane spells and spell-like effects." Does this +3 apply to Spell Resistance as well? I'm looking at Magic Missile, which has a "yes&...

Re: Your Take on PC Hit Points
I think it was 2nd edition AD&D and the Combat & Tactics book that had the first system for critical hit injury that I actually thought was mostly decent, it later becoming the foundation used in d20 with the threat range (though not the verification roll as I recall). Anyway, I could see a ...

I suppose I treat it very differently than some, at least from the approach. I make things a "save vs. distraction." Characters with good meditative or focus powers, like say, a monk, ranger, spellcasters, and thieves/assassins can steady their mind and be prepared for things... but only w...

Re: Your Take on PC Hit Points
Forgot to mention: I do not use critical hits. A few weapons have a "threat range" like weapons of sharpness, vorpal, feather-edged, crushing, or disruption (vs. undead) but players face more attacks than they deliver and therefore are subject to receiving critical injuries more often. Als...

Re: Humans and 3 Primes too powerful?
Yep, the original system was "Target 20" which did not have Primes, per se, but a mechanism into which they were formed, and that termed got dropped due to a variety of reasons, one of which was another game using the name (Blue Rose?). I only remember this because I posited the first syst...

I've been allowing fighters of level 7 and above to make use of the barbarian intimidate ability as long as they are attacking, and defeating, at least one enemy per round. Defeat is subjective and can include such things as felling, killing, disarming, and more. Note, I do not use the barbarian cla...

Re: Unified XP chart
There is a game system, called The Arcanum, which has a method I actually like but would require some slight tweaking for a C&C-esque game. In that game, all classes are defined as either Single-Classed or Dual-Classed. Single-classes have XP advancement 1 and Dual-Class have XP advancement 2. N...

I have used this method on and off for several games: a) Characters begin play with their Constitution score + maximum for class, but do not gain Constitution modifier b) at level 2, characters gain their Constitution modifier, only, unless it is negative at which point they gain 1 HP c) at level 3,...

My guess is the language used is Trollspeak and it should merely have said "half-elf." The authors sometimes get cutesy. However, a half-fey would be, potentially, interesting. I know I've used a folklore-inspired version of gnome in my personal setting so something more along the darker p...

Re: module with pre-rolled characters or a list of characters & stats ?
Seeing as C&C and AD&D are oft touted as hand-in-hand, with conversion being relatively easy and ad hoc, there are some older resources one might find very useful such as AD&D 1st editions Rogues Gallery. I personally find material for the Bards' Games' The Arcanum to work exceptionally ...

Pretty sure I did not add costs to Engineering Castles but maybe there was something. There was a lot left on the cutting room floor that I would have wanted to add, but did not, so that book is, unfortunately, not one I am particularly proud of... it is nice, yeah, but it could have been so much be...
