Re: Missing 1st Ed Cleric Spells

I have multiple types of magic-using classes. The type akin to what is in the PHB is the studious sort (wizard) and technically anyone can get their base abilities if they are smart enough or take enough time to train wizardly arts. This is somewhat similar to the class-and-a-half route except it's ...

Re: The Murky Land of Attributes and Levels

(Un)Fortunately, C&C leaves a few things unexplained so the Castle Keeper can decide for themselves how it works. I personally allow all gained abilities whether race or class (or purchased during training) to gain level adjustment as I find this simpler. It does not make it "right." I have consider...

Re: Assisted attribute checks

There are several ways to handle it, but I believe there are a couple (at least one anyway) offered in the CKG though I do not know the page offhand. What I generally do is this: First determine if the assistance will actually help -- some tasks, like hide in shadows, may not be able to benefit from...

Re: Missing 1st Ed Cleric Spells

Ah, there is indeed a 2nd level "detect charm" spell in the 1st edition PHB. Wow. Completely missed that, probably because our group had very limited need for it. If I were to include it, myself, I might consider making it a possible illusionist power. Or, a spell. Maybe level 0 for them, level 1 fo...

Re: Missing 1st Ed Cleric Spells

I don't recall a "detect charm" spell in either 1st or 2nd edition PHB, but that may be faulty memory. It was likely certainly added in one or more of the supplements (very likely found in the Spell Compendiums.) I think the "resist fire" spell was renamed in C&C -- protection from elements or somet...

When you're only going to include a certain # of spells per class per spell level, how do you decide what you decline?

Re: What Video Game(s) are you playing

So we started MUA3 on the Switch. Haven't gotten very far. Need to redo some levels as the characters just don't advance that quickly and are pretty weak. Its meh so far... camera doesn't follow properly, sluggishness in some battles, characters have stupid limitations, etc. I hope it'll get better ...

Re: Abilities into PHB tables

I believe a similar thing was done for the original C&C character sheets (the ones that were per class/Prime) but I have not looked in quite some time. Even if it was, your effort is not diminished. It is helpful to have an "at a glance" sort of thing, if you want to plan ahead or even to just make ...

Finished Season 21 of Diablo 3, actually conquered it (completed all challenges.)

So, I'm done with D3 and will wait for D4.

Bought a Nintendo Switch and Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3. Haven't played it yet but will soon, whenever my wife gets a few minutes to join me.

Re: A question

Disagree as much as you like. Back attack is infinitely easier to achieve in the midst of an existing combat than a sneak attack. It may be the very first strike is simpler as a sneak, but if it doesn't kill, who cares.

Re: Popularity of focused v generic game systems

I'll make a distinction. There are "focused" games, such as Chill or Call of Cthulhu which drive toward a certain game style, or theme/tone. These are OK to me as I sometimes want to delve into an otherwise uncharted territory. These are basically "genre games" and there are countless numbers of the...

Assassins hurling great scimitars is just all kinds of fun. Make it a two-handed weapon and it becomes, well, maybe even cooler... I guess that depends on what you like.

Re: Cleric Spells

There is a longstanding tradition to differentiate clerics by their spell access and divine powers... certainly with "priests of a specific mythos" or "specialty priests" and then codified again in d20 era D&D with domains. Certainly someone has posted conversions of these. I am sure I have seen the...

For the most part, it would be treated like an AD&D conversion with some more specific things due to HM's "parody." You might want to start with any more recent "CastleHack" -- unfortunately, the one I found is more the original and only has limited details for conversion: https://web.archive.org/we...

Re: resisting possession - demon devil undead and the like

One thing I like doing with possessing entities is give them a fatal flaw, some weird, myth-inspired (and stolen) thing that makes them particularly vulnerable (or at least stops their possession) such as presence of swine (Biblical) or even wearing blessed leather armor (Medieval). There are others...

Hey years later but thought I'd go on the same thread, we'll see if that was the right decision:) Is there a list of humanoids somewhere for easy reference on this spell (not easily laid out in M&T). Re: resisting possession - demon devil undead and the like

For simplicity, I would likely look at spells like magic jar. I thought that was in the PHB. Otherwise, it might depend on how complex you want to go... Did the possessed ask for it? I mean, did they say the fiend's name or do some sort of act that called its attention, making them susceptible (such...

Re: Optional weapon bonuses versus armor class?

While the concept is fun to explore, I personally find that, when I want to do something like this, I tend toward tech level vs. tech level so that a stone age axe vs. a steel age plate armor gets a lower chance to score damage (-to hit) but a steel age axe vs. stone age hide gets a bonus... usually...

While the "new spell creation" guidelines are intended for use to develop a spell not yet known in the game, they can also be used to learn spells "new to you." This includes variations to a spell as well such that you can have the same spell as written but with a mechanical twist such as larger are...

Re: Curse similar to Dispel Magic

Generally, a spell cast by a divine caster will use Wisdom if the caster makes the save/check; Intelligence will be used if done so by an arcane caster as these are their "governing attribute." Special cases would ordinarily be called out as exceptions. For me, I prefer to have a remove curse be som...
