C&C Conan complete

Post by ThrorII »

I have completed my C&C conversion of Mongoose Publishing's Conan rpg.

The conversion documents replace the standard C&C rules on Race, Class, Equipment, and Magic, along with my house rule documents on SEIGE checks emulating skills, and Adventuring in the Hyborian Age (which covers things like heroic character generation, Fate Points, Fear & the Unknown, etc).

In doing this conversion, I tried to maintain the basic system of C&C and ease-of-play, while importing the Conan specifics in regards to race, class, equipment, and sorcery. The goal was to 'dumb down' the 3.5 Conan to make it fit the rules lite C&C, while maintaining the feel, look, and tie to the original rules. I wanted to have a C&C system, wherein you could take any 3.5 Conan sourcebook or rulebook, and easily convert it to run in my C&C Conan game.

The 7 small documents are available to any who would like it (both in pdf and doc), just PM me. I am also looking for anyone who would like to host it on their site.

I have not played these rules yet, so I make no promises as to how well they convert or work. They should be good though.

For the short term, if you're looking to offer these for download, zip them into one file, upload the file to something like mediafire (which I use for the download links for old C&C errata) and post the link here.

I'd like to take a look at them.

As to hosting them, check with Seskis. He is hosting some stuff for me.

That sounds kind of cool. I'll take a look at them if you don't mind.

Looks good so far, I do kinda wish you had given some more abilities to the soldier class. It seems a little sparse.

The Hyborian Age is awesome, hard to run High Fantasy though.

The idea was to keep it as close to C&C as possible. I pretty much just ported over the C&C Fighter. Even in Mongoose Publishing's Conan the soldier is pretty sparce (just like 3.5, where he is a Feat monkey). The class abilities of the Conan soldier are pretty much unit Feats (giving bonuses to multi-soldier allies). I've always felt they were fairly useless in the Mongoose game, so I just kept it simple.

Add as you like. Thats what this was for.

Which is why I loved Mongoose Publishing's Conan. It made d20 3.5 playable. Which is why I chose to dumb it down to C&C.

Agreed! I loved Mongoose's Conan, but even it was a bit complex. Couldn't agree more. Looking forward to readin' ThrorII's take on it.

Bumping this because there has been a lot of talk about Conan.

Thror, is that file still up to date? I was reading it and it's freakin' great.

That particular file is now gone. I'm up to version 2 now. the new link is

http://www.mediafire.com/?rdmvi387d9o14

It includes the C&C Conan version 2 rules, a character sheet, SIEGE check player handout, a Combat Actions player handout, a player handout on equipment kits (since equipment is secondary in Conan, it keeps it simple), and finally a quick start adventure rules (to make REH type adventures on the fly).

By the way -- how the heck did you get your text onto a background that looks just like the Mongoose one? I'd love to be able to do that!

Thank you, all of you!! Over the couple of years I've done this, I've gotten a lot of positive feedback.

The only negative feedback I've gotten is about some races being 'better' than others, some classes (namely the soldier) needing more umphf!, and the difficulty of being a sorcerer. I tried to stay as close as possible to the Mongoose Conan d20 game (a game I truely enjoy!), and these criticisms are equally valid for the source material as they are for my conversion.

@finarvyn--as far as the page borders, I admit it is from a page from a Mongoose Conan b&w pdf book I own. I copied a pdf page in to MSpaint, deleted the text, and saved it as a jpeg. I then input the jpeg as a watermark background in to a MSword doc. when complete, the word doc is converted back to a pdf. I'm sure there could be copywrite issues, but I'm not doing it for profit, and only for private useage. Each section (races, classes, etc) is actually a separtate pdf, that is merged in to one.

The fonts, pdf maker, and pdf merger are all freeware.

This is freaking awesome. AWESOME.

Seriously, I love the low magic, Conan-esque setting. I played the D20 Conan game from Mongoose for a while. The players loved it, but it was a bit clunky. Oh well! This looks like just the thing to throw back to Conan.

Poniard, check.

Square cut mane, check.

Adventure awaits.

Thanks everyone!!! This was truely a labor of love for me. I'm glad to share it, and glad people are enjoying it. I run our group through some Hyborian goodness for one-off games (6 so far), and we really have fun.

I'm just thrilled to have nearly 80 downloads since July, just on word of mouth.

I am taking some time to read this document. I really like what I see. I am a real big fan of Conan and pretty much everything by REH. Do you think you could try coming up with a character sheet? I know the regular C&C sheet would probably work just as well but I would prefer something that has that distinctive look.

I might go ahead and do one myself.

Forget it, found the character sheet. I was running a Conan game using Barbarians of Lemuria (another very cool game), but I might be willing to give this one a shot.
