Re: Planescape with class-less D&D
A Practice Taroka Reading with Gareth
-------------------------------------------
One night in the warehouse, before Gareth makes another foray out to stay at a tavern or inn to satisfy his wanderlusting urges, he draws out a well worn deck of taroka cards in a once ornate, but now faded leather case. Deliberately and carefully shuffling them, the gypsy walks around and finds a nearby hobo. "Usually I am asking a jink for this my friend, but for the sake of my guild, I am giving you your fortune as a gift."
Spreading out the cards in his hand, he offers them to the man. "Choose five of them my friend, but do not look at them, put them on the table face down with one in the middle then one on each direction around it." As the man does so, Gareth shuffles the deck again, then draws one card himself. He puts it some distance from the main pattern of cards. Looking at the arrangement gravely, the gypsy leans back on his seat and directs the man. "Please be turning over the middle card my good man," he asks, which elicits a knowing smile and nod. "My friend, you may be thinking this because I am telling you a fortune, but this card is considered the best augury in the deck. It is the Sun card and it bodes very well for you. It is saying that all is going well and coming to fruition. Something will be happening for your good. Now, if you had to chose north, south, east, or west, which way would you go?"
Looking a little puzzled, the man scratches at his head. "Starting from here?" "Sure," Gareth replies. Looking around, the man thinks for a moment, then decides. "East". "Turn up the card in that direction" Gareth says. This reveals an armored mounted figure weilding a deadly looking sword. "The Knight of Swords, a challenge," Gareth says solemnly. "This is one aspect which you must approach with caution, as it combines elements of fire and air, which can be volatile. It is meaning that while good things are happening, you must be careful of your temper. You must not lose sight of the patience you had in the past while you were waiting for the good things even as you realize them. And now, having gone east, which way would you go of those that remain?"
And again the man thinks, "Well, I suppose I'd go north then, maybe catch me a glimpse of the celestials". Turning up the northern card reveals a robed man holding out a lantern in one hand and a staff the other. His hood is over his head. "The Hermit," Gareth whispers intently. "This card is saying you must have focus, you must attempt to follow one thing at a time, and live in the present as much as you can. To maintain your happiness you must not seek externally, but must look within for wisdom." "I guess I might as well go west next then," the man says next, eying the south card a little apprehensively. This turns up a large man seated on a stone chair with lion motifs, with many golden chalices on a table behind him. He smiles and wears comfortable clothes, but has the boots of a gladiator.
"This is the nine of chalices my friend, a card that is meaning good things will come from that direction you were choosing. The chalices are the good things in life, and the man knows they are real but his boots tell you you must work for them." His hands shaking a little, the man turns up the final southern card. It reveals a design of seven smaller stars around a larger middle one, and a woman performing a ritual with a pitcher of water and a body of water. "This is a very auspicious thing indeed that your telling began with the sun and ended with the stars. There are those among my people who say that the stars are things like our sun, but very far away. Only you are not having such things in this place, suns and stars. Perhaps you have heard of them. Regardless this means that the whole of the cosmos resonates with your purpose, and you are on the right path. If you listen to your heart's desire, you will achieve it."
Finally, Gareth takes up the card that he chose from the deck himself. "This, my friend, is the influence of chaos. Even the best laid plans of us and the universe can change unexpectedly sometimes. If there is one thing to watch out for especially, it is this," he says, and flips the card. Seated on a winged throne is a kingly figure weilding a sword in his left hand. "Another challenge, this king embodies the elements of earth and physical things, and air and mental things. Just as a tornado can indiscriminately destroy the things of the land below, so can destructive thoughts wreak havoc on the body. Be careful to guard your thoughts in these good times to come, and keep vigilant, lest you fall to harm."
Frowning a little, the man looks the gypsy up and down. "Lot of fancy words there cutter. But you know, things have been going pretty good for me lately. I ate twice this week and I think I might have a bowel movement too. Things really _are_ looking up" he says, beaming. "That is wonderful my friend," Gareth says. "Cough cough cough, how did those rations get on the ground there? Almost as if it was the universe just offering them up," the gypsy says, performing a little slight of hand. "My first reading my friend, since I was taught some of the meanings of this deck. I am having much more to learn from it," Gareth says with a sheepish grin.

Afterthoughts: The Planewalker's Handbook only lists rogue Modrons as playable, with any other kind being "monsters" - however, I broke with the book and allowed a non-rogue to see what would happen. It was inevitable that to be a completely-functional individual, one eventually comes to the conclusion that Primus' reasoning is nonfunctional and does not fit how a biological organism or insectoid collective works.
This suggests that Primus' organization scheme only works on Mechanus, or that his ideal of pure Lawful Neutrality is impossible for non-natives of Mechanus to possibly live by. Yet neither of these possibilities will stop Primus from trying to impose Lawful Neutrality the way he sees it. He may not even be capable of seeing things any other way.
A True Neutral might think that this applies to all of the forces of the alignment planes.
Month 7 day 27 through Month 8 Day 1
(campaign started on Month 3 Day 1)
(10,500 XP accumulated before this session)
700 XP per character
(11,200 XP accumulated after this session)
400 extra XP to Modron S&R Unit 9
All members of the Law Association gain 1 rank
The Law Association was holding the gold reward in escrow, and now releases it to the party. It comes up to 300 gold per character.
The party now possesses a shot-up Terminator, hidden in someone's pack.

Re: Planescape with class-less D&D
Are you ok with me rolling up a new character then?
Re: Planescape with class-less D&D
That is always an option - or your current character can change gods and/or alignment. Seeing what life outside of Mechanus is like has given new perspective.Penny-Whistle wrote:Are you ok with me rolling up a new character then?

Re: Planescape with class-less D&D
1. AC bonus is supposed to be caused indirectly by the racial Dexterity bonus
2. I don't do weapon damage changes for size. I instead prefer that to be done through racial Strength modifiers.
3. Illusionist spells come from the following order:
- 3.1. The spells I've been able to port over so far on the site.
- 3.2. Castles & Crusades Illusionist spells. I rule that the Illusionist Cure spells are basically holographic organs and blood that disappear at the end of their durations, thinking back to that one episode of Star Trek Voyager where they were able to keep people on life support that way.
- 3.3. d20 spells of the Enchantment, Illusion, and Universal schools
- 3.4. 5th edition spells that are required for the Warlock Pacts (CHA) skill to function properly - specifically Eldritch Blast. I should have at least Eldritch Blast ported over within 12 hours.
4. Warlock Pacts (CHA) skill gives one of its pact options at every single level, including the first. The Eldritch Pacts listed under "Level 1", "Level 6", etc. are competitors to the spell pacts for your choices.

Re: Planescape with class-less D&D
Thanks for the clarification and especially for allowing a new character. This is going to be fun.
