Well actually, we're gonna finish this game first and use next week and the following Sundays to do so. And then you and Aergraith can run games alternatively (unless you don't wish to - then I could run something or Penny).

Winifryde leads the party through the secret and hidden passageways of the forest to the front of Dward Hill. From their spot of concealment, they can see orcs in the entrance room. As they watch they also see two orc patrols circling around from each side of the entrance. The party decides to wait until they circle around again and then they will ambush them.

Wow. The C&C flesh crawler is a much scarier monster than the AD&D carrion crawler.
AC: 13 (for the body) in AD&D vs 17 in C&C
Behaviour: tentacle attack which if successful will lead to a bite the next turn vs 8 attacks per round all of which can cause paralysis in C&C
Damage: paralysis from the tentacles plus 2 for a bite attack vs paralysis AND up to 36 damage from bites and tentacles in C&C
Reward: 420 xp for AD&D vs 73 xp in C&C. 73!!!!

BTB, the flesh crawler contains 70 XP + 3 XP per hit point. 73 XP would be for a one hit point flesh crawler. An "average" flesh crawler would have 106 XP. Also, BTB a flesh crawler cannot make 8 attacks per round. It can either bite twice or make 6 claw attacks.

Fact remains: as a monster, it is far more powerful than the original version. And that is just the combat behaviour. I didn't mention the special death throes attack.
EDIT:
That was my first experience with a flesh crawler.
I really liked our encounter and I always appreciate a TPK because they get me thinking. How will I approach this monster the next time I see one? If I am including it into one of my own games, what can I do with terrain to make it harder for the monster? That kind of thing.
I like the 5th edition version. It seems more animal-like. That carrion crawler has a lair nearby. After it paralyses the victim, it drags the body to the lair. The other characters could follow, taking shots, for example. But also, horrifyingly, imagine the character's experience of being dragged down the hallway ....

Check out this campaign journal from Frank Mentzer's home game. The 8th post on the linked page covers session 5 wherein the party encountered giant carrion crawlers and my poor PC was dragged down the hallway as you describe.

Poor Carrot.
*sniff* Thank you. It still hurts all of these long years later.
Edit: Just noticed today is the 8 year anniversary of that dread carrion crawler attack. Spooky!
