Rhu's Sunday - Lion in the Ropes

Post by Rhuvein »

Prelude:

"Lord Galveston’s lands are plagued by murders. For the past several months, people have been disappearing. Some bodies have turned up, their half-mutilated corpses found along the banks of the river.

Strange tracks of a cat-like creature have been found around the villages, and rumors abound that a Charon Fiend, a dreaded beast of chaos, has come from the Twilight Wood and settled in the area.

The latest victim is the Deacon of the Four Saints Church in Capendu. His body,
found torn and mangled in the river, sent the alarmed villagers to the aged Lord Galveston for aid."

Session I - Capendu

The adventurers:

Gringnr as:

Thurgood, brave human wizard

Aergraith as:

Saxbert, mighty human fighter

Penny as:

Thimbleberry, discerning gnome druid

NPCs:

Lavinia, halfling cleric

Bailey Quarters, ranger

The action:

The adventurers arrive in Freiburg and visit the local pub, (insert cool name here) to enjoy a nice lunch. After dining they read the notices on the boards and learn about the trouble in Capendu - and decide to travel there.

The party arrives in the town just after sunset on a cold and rainy evening, but the town seems locked up for the night. At Marlowe's Tavern, two city guards along with the stable boy tell you that due to the recent happening in the town, Lord Galveston has recommended that everyone stay inside after dark.

The guards tell the group that the acolytes from the Church of Four Saints will shelter them for the evening, and that they should hurry along and get inside. Good nights are said and the party rides on to the church at the end of town.

After dismounting and knocking the front door of the church, Brother Benjamin opens the door ~ after ascertaining the nature of the group. He is actually quite relieved to be able to have the adventurers as guests for the evening. He and another acolyte bring hot food and drink, along with blankets.

The party learns about the terrible murders that have occurred recently and that many believe it's the work of a dreaded monster, called a charon fiend. Some of the bodies have been ripped apart and the townfolk as well as the acolyte are scared to venture out.

The next day, the group heads into town where they meet Bailey Quarters. She agrees to help them and is able to pick up tracks leading down to the river. They find a cave and Thimbleberry can partly see inside, a large beast who begins to growl. She speaks gently into the cave to calm the creature and then pulls out some food and lays it down.

Out of the cave, comes a lion with a wooden stockade around its neck that has ropes hanging off.

The group remember the lion they saw a month ago in the traveling circus, it must have escaped.

The lion allows Thimbleberry and Bailey to remove the stockade from his neck. He licks Thimbleberry's hand, but then suddenly turns and runs away.

Back in town, brother Tarlek is found ripped and mangled in the back of the church. The acolytes begin to suspect some creature or evil is coming from the crypts below the church.

The adventurers agree to explore and investigate that afternoon.

End session.

Session II - Into the crypts/Garrick, the orange hair

The adventurers:

Penny as:

Thimbleberry, discerning gnome druid

Gringnr as:

Thurgood, brave human wizard

NPCs:

Lavinia, halfling cleric
Saxbert, mighty human fighter
Leonidis, human acolyte

The action:

As the heroes prepare to enter the crypt, they learn from one of the acolytes who has just come from town, that a band of robbers and bandits have been harassing the villages and demanding protection money or there will be trouble. The leader is an ungern with flaming red hair named Garrick, who has 6 or 7 ungern followers along with 4-5 goblins in his gang.

The acolyte introduces himself as Leonidis and tells Lavinia he wished to become a cleric and asks if he could assist the party when they enter the crypt. Lavinia looking at each of her fellow adventurers and seeing their approval agrees to take him.

Leonidis then says that he has a message from Lord Galveston, who asks if the group could drive Garrick away from the village. He can't pay much, only 10 gps per person. The group quickly agrees and then they move to the back of the church where brother Orn unlocks the steel gate that leads to the stairs down into the crypts.

The adventurers explore the dungeons rooms that are mostly unused or are storage areas. They do get to the back and find the burial crypts where the recent dead members of the church are entombed. Upon examining the back wall, they discover that it is a false wall and behind is a very old room with gargoyles in the corners.

The ground contains pits which contain remains of humans who died without a proper burial. The bodies look like twisted zombies.

Lavinia perceives spirits in the room who are able to enter the room though the walls. At this point, she does not detect evil - but does figure that these spirits might be ghosts of the dead bodies.

Thimbleberry gives her the list of warrants found earlier that contain the names of these prisoners who were left for dead.

In a strong voice she reads the names and commands them to return to their burial pits. She blesses and consecrates the ground and the party grabs shovels and proceeds to bury the bodies as she hold out her holy symbol. The group sees/feels the spirits rise up and go up through the roof of the crypt - to go to the Halls of the Dead.

The group quickly make their way back and out of the dungeon and out through the church, so they can get on their horses to ride back to town.

The find Garrick, the orange hair threatening the villagers and they call him out. He tells them that they have no business here and that they should leave.

The adventurers tell him they will not leave and that he has one chance to surrender. Garrick signals his men and the battle is on.

Garrick and his party are a strong group of fighters and give the heroes a tough time, until suddenly a loud roar comes from behind the bushes. And then a huge lion leaps out of the brush and attacks Garrick. Many of his ungern are stunned by the lion's roar.

The adventurers aided by the friendly lion are able to kill all the ungern while some of the townies fight and defeat the goblins.

The villagers come out and cheer on the party, and quickly dispose of the ungern bodies by burning them.

A large party occurs after this and Lord Galveston attends and rewards the group with large land holdings.

All's well that ends well!

End of adventure.
